Whit Baker is a hired gun who has just finished a job in Nogales, Arizona. I did read again without stopping but then it is only a short story. I was waiting for a trick ending but all was fairly predictable but nice. A pleasant story of early America which reminds us the free enterprise and competition system that the USA is based on is really only for the rich.
This was a well-paced read, well framed in settings and characters. The violence was presented in a way that will not be offensive to the more sensitive reader. The story could have been longer because there was enough of value to support that, but it worked very well as presented. I enjoyed it.
The story is well written, but I felt the plot was not only too predictable, but due to the short length, the characters lacked depth. Add in two other criticisms, one being the plot was thin, in example the early confrontation between Baker and the four "ruffians" to me did not play out very well, being towards a scenario somewhat not believable. Secondly, the dialogue started out more "Western style" but was not consistent throughout the story.
It was a nice "story" but there was nothing special to look forward to or consider. I liken it to a color painting that is missing patches of color. I will say it was better from a writing style than the author's previous attempts, but a more complex plot with intrigue, misdirection, etc., plus character development would have significantly improved the plot and story.
A great 'Good Guy to the Rescue" story. Was on vacation when I read it and had plenty of other distractions, but couldn't wait to get back to this.
