This fast paced treasure from Sandra Brown delivers us into the secretive world of politics. Barrie Travis, a news boadcaster, is privy to information of the death of the First Lady's infant son. And is twisted into doing the story, the whole story.Between the mania of the press, the sleazy political characters, the mental health of the First Lady & Barrie's own tangles with her bosses, this is an intriguing plot that is plausible & very bold.
I thouroughly enjoyed this book. One of Browns best. With all that has gone on at the White House in the last few years....very beliveable!

Exclusive (Audible Audio Edition) Sandra Brown Tanya Eby Brilliance Audio Books Reviews
I really like this author. Some really good twists and turns. Other than the first encounter with Gray and Barrie, which was rushed and undeveloped for any significance, I grew to like the characters. I have read a few and will seek more of Sandra Brown's stories.
This one started out just a little slow for me but boy did it pick up quickly!! I just finished it a couple of days ago. I wanted to find out the truth but I didn't want the book to end. I loved Barrie and Gray together. I really loved the character nicknamed Daily. I think he was the perfect father figure/best friend for Barrie and a good addition to their team. The plot is really good and full of suspense. There is murder, adultery, abuse of power, cover ups, scandals, sex, lies, all mixed together for a can't put it down, page turning read. I loved it!
Many years ago, lyrics were displayed on a movie screen, and a bouncing ball guided the audience along. To the extent that you shut down critical thinking and simply go along with the plot development (follow the bouncing ball) of this novel, you will, I think, be somewhat entertained.
The book has a number of flaws a heroine who intrudes like Goldilocks, then has sex with the grumpy, nasty bear... a hero who is two dimensional... a president who renders the Godfather appealing by comparison ... a politician so hungry for power he'll marry his daughter off to a killer ... and more.
Still, I got hooked - had to follow that bouncing ball to the end in spite of main characters who are not particularly likeable. I scanned some in last quarter, but I finished.
It is a testament to Sandra Brown's writing gifts that I give this novel 3 stars! If you're a dyed-in-the-wool Sandra Brown fan, you'll probably like it. If not, well, she written better stories...
I have read a few books by Sandra Brown and the results have been patchy - a few were pretty readable but most have been pretty ordinary. This e-book is a reissue of a 1996 publication and is not one of her best because the plot is so over-the-top.
Barrie Travis is an ambitious TV reporter at a B grade network working hard to make a break. One day the First Lady calls her to arrange a personal chat which hinges on the recent death of her young baby from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and hints that the baby may have been murdered. This starts Barrie on a one-woman crusade to find the truth.
On the way Barrie encounters Gray Bondurant, a former presidential aide. After a passionate first encounter both Barrie and Gray are up against the President's current unscrupulous aide and his henchmen, and even the President himself. The plotline is ludicrous, finishing up with The President trying to destroy not only his manic-depressive wife but anyone else in his way. On the sidelines is the father of the First Lady, a powerful senior Senator who is as shady and corrupt as the President.
An Editorial Review sums it up beautifully - "a dead infant, a sleazy president, a manic-depressive first lady, an aide that makes G. Gordon Liddy look like a wuss, murder, adultery, a thousand skeletons peeping from a thousand closets". No wonder I thought the plotline borders on the ludicrous.
Sandra Brown is a prolific author of 77 romantic and thriller suspense novels who writes to please her wide audience. Sometimes she meets her target with me, but not this time.
This could have been so much better. I love this author, so maybe it was written early in her career. Or maybe just not one of her best. The story was predicable and sometimes boring. This was one of those “I bought it so I’ll finish it.” The female lead character was, for the most part, a reckless idiot. The male lead was very unappealing. The worst part, for me, was their first meeting. I prefer a little intrigue, a little cat and mouse, definitely good banter. I liked the ending and will read more of S. B.’s books.
I think this was the best Sandra Brown book I have read. The plot was beyond intricate. Barrie Travis ( a news reporter with a slightly tarnished rep),interviews the first lady of the USA who tells her a story that could be the greatest story of her career or a disaster. The first lady intimates that the recent death of her infant son may not be due to SIDS as reported but rather murder.Barrie tries to find out the truth. She is aided by Gary Bondurant(former marine and secret service agent) who may have romantic ties to the first lady. One of the prime suspects is the President himself David Merritt. Needless to say there is a lot of cover up and political intrigue involved not to mention a blossoming relationship between Barrie and Gary. The denouement was a mind blowing. Well worth the read.
I like most Sandra Brown books I "read" during my commute. I found myself staying in my car to listen to the story after I reached my destination - which I can only recall really having done with Envy! This one was very long - about 45 chapters, which I love because I like to get invested in a story and get to know the characters. I like the heroine because she was smart but also "normal" and made mistakes - but she didn't let them get her down. Overall, great book and worth the extra money because it was very long. I strongly recommend if you typically enjoy Brown's novels.
